Recently I started using Plasma activities, and I found it very useful and effective in my workflow. The only thing I missed in Plasma Desktop 4.6 is a fast and simple way to switch between activities and manage it.

Then I found a little plasmoid which can be put in the systray and does exactly what I need: the Activity Manager Plasmoid. It seems that it will be packaged in Kubuntu Natty, but I couldn’t find a package for Maverick.

Fortunately installing from source is very straightforward:

Install build dependencies

$ sudo apt-get build-dep plasma-widgets-addons

Download the source package Extract it somewhere:

$ tar xjf 136278-activitymanager-0.5.tar.bz2

Go in the source directory:

$ cd activitymanager-0.5

Configure with CMake:

$ cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/usr .

Build

$ make

Install

$ sudo make install

Regenerate cache

$ kbuildsycoca4

Voilà, your shiny Activity Manager is now ready to be added to the system tray or your panel like any other Plasmoid.

Di che cosa parlo? Firefox 3 punta ad entrare nel Guinness dei primati come il software più scaricato in un periodo di 24 ore (il giorno della release).

Per partecipare è utile iscriversi su Spread Firefox lasciando il proprio indirizzo email e la nazione in cui si vive. In tal modo Spread Firefox vi invierà un reminder nel fatidico “Download Day” per ricordarvi di tenere fede al vostro impegno solenne di record man: scaricare Firefox 3 ed entrare nella storia.
Sul sito è anche presente una mappa con la statistica delle promesse dalle varie nazioni del mondo. Sarà interessante vedere dove si piazzerà l’Italia.

A me la ZUI piace e per come l’ho capita altro non è che il parallelo dei desktop virtuali nel caso dei plasmoidi. Tutti riconoscono l’utilità dei desktop virtuali per saltare velocemente da un set di finestre ad un altro e penso che quando i plasmoidi saranno parte delle nostre vite riconosceremo anche l’utilità della ZUI.

Quello che non mi era chiaro è come i due concetti si sposeranno… la vita non è fatta di soli plasmoidi, così come (pare) non sarà più fatta di sole finestre. Saltare da un gruppo di finestre _E_ plasmoidi ad un altro sarà una delle nostre più frequenti azioni quotidiane (già mi immagino a saltare dal gruppo “cazzeggio” al gruppo “sto lavorando come un negro, vedi capo?”).

Per questo ho scritto una mail al suddetto Sebastian per chiedere chiarimenti…

I like very much the idea of zooming in Plasma, but don’t you think that the
integration with KWin desktopgrid it is a very important issue to address?
“Human activities” are made of both Plasmoids and Applications, for instance I
would like to have also some KDE-Games application in my “Freetime” activity,
as much as I would like to have Kdevelop in my “Work” activity.

IMO “Activity switching” is a natural and useful way of managing the desktop,
and I think Plasma is going in the right direction, but without KWin virtual
desktop integration, only a 50% of the potential is achieved.

Maybe each Plasma Activity should be mapped to a virtual desktop? Plasma
Activity switching and Virtual Desktop switching should be made in the same
way?

I don’t know how much is difficult to achieve this, but I think it’s a very
very important feature to have in future releases.

Can you comment on this? Some decision is already made in the Plasma team?

Yes, we’ll be integrating those two. There shouldn’t be a one-to-one match,
however, so we’ll have to find a nice way to integrate those two. Probably
4.2 material, but it *will* come.
